This document summarizes some tips for designing peripheral circuits that should be noted when you use the VCE(sat) detection function of a smart gate driver coupler such as TLP5214A/TLP5214/TLP5212/TLP5222. The VCE(sat) detection (DESAT detection) circuit which detects the rise of the collector or drain voltage (VCE) when an over-current flows into the power semiconductor switch device (hereinafter referred to ‘power device’) driven by the gate driver by causes, such as a short circuit of load, makes the power device turn off, and protects it. However, the VCE may rise unusually and largely due to the inductances of the loads when the power device switches, and if it enters the DESAT terminal, an erroneous detection of the DESAT detection circuit may occur. In three-phase inverters and other inverters, noise generated during switching of other phases may cause an erroneous detection of the DESAT detection circuit due to noise circulating through power supply lines and GND lines or electromagnetic induction between wires. This document provides tips to reduce the likelihood of DESAT false detections.

Integrated load switches are electronic switches used in systems to turn power rails on and off, similar to a relay or a MOSFET. Integrated load switches provide many benefits, including protection features that are too difficult or complex to implement with discrete components.

The I²C bus (Inter-Integrated Circuit) is a popular serial communication interface. It is mainly used to connect microcontrollers with peripheral ICs (e.g. sensors or memory). The bus uses one bidirectional data line (SCL) and one clock line (SDA) each. However, the I²C bus is not only used within circuit boards, but is also extended into other areas in many applications with the aid of various connectors and cables. This makes the I²C bus potentially more susceptible to external interference such as ESD, burst and radiated RF disturbances. The goal of this application note is to show the reader a suitable filter and protection circuit that increases the noise immunity of the I²C bus without sacrificing the signal quality of the data and clock lines. For this purpose, simulation models were created in LTspice and a real application was measured to verify the simulation results.

The Maxim USB laboratory is a MAX3421E-/MAX3420E-based system using an ARM7 processor and example software. This application note describes the system and the software that runs it.
