Solar charging applications typically require an input voltage regulation due to large variations in solar cell lighting condition. Combining an NVDC (narrow voltage dc/dc) battery charging architectures with solar cell charging can extend battery life and run times by maintaining a very narrow voltage range for the system power. This application report shows how to do a NVDC charger solution with a bq24650 battery charge controller. It covers the bq24650 basics, explains the design requirements for NVDC charger, and gives a design example and test results.
