Many electronic components require their temperature to be regulated for best performance and for longer operating life times. Precise temperature control down to 0.1 °C is critical for certain applications such as laser diodes used in optical modules: where even a 1 °C change in temperature can cause a drift of 0.1 nm in the wavelength of the laser.Thermoelectric cooling (TEC) devices using the Peltier effect can be used for controlling the temperature in these applications. The direction of current flowing through the TEC determines if it is being heated or cooled. This design guide shows how to implement a TEC driver using TI’s low quiescent current (11 µA) buck-boost converter (TPS63802) in combination with a microcontroller (MSP430FR2433) to precisely regulate the temperature of sensitive devices.
